In April, a chef named Dylan Healy who was serving as a volunteer aid worker was apprehended at a checkpoint. The same day, Russia declared Andrew Hill had surrendered and broadcast a video of him dressed in military garb. It comes after Shaun Pinner and Aiden Aslin, two further British males, were given death sentences last month. They were charged with the same offenses as Mr. Healy and Mr. Hill at the hearing in an unrecognised Russian proxy court in eastern Ukraine. Since then, the European Court of Human Rights has intervened to urge that the sentence be commuted. However, Russia has rejected the call, claiming that it no longer follows the rulings of the Strasbourg court and that the pro-Russian, secessionist Donetsk People's Republic should decide what would happen to the men.
