How physical exercise protects the heart

Image
Regular exercise is considered an important form of treatment for heart failure, a condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. The benefits of exercise range from prevention of cachexia -severe loss of weight and muscle mass- and control of arterial blood pressure to improved cardiac function, postponing a degenerative process that causes progressive heart cell death. About 70% of heart failure patients die from the condition within five years. A study by the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil, published recently in the journal Autophagy , helps to elucidate part of the mechanism whereby aerobic exercise protects the sick heart. "Basically, we discovered that aerobic training facilitates the removal of dysfunctional mitochondria from heart cells," said Julio Cesar Batista Ferreira, a professor at the Biomedical Science Institute (ICB-USP) and principal investigator for the project which was supported by

Could this protein explain why drinking can be so pleasurable?

New research conducted in mice looks at how alcohol engages with the brain's reward center, and which mechanisms might be set in motion to prevent excessive drinking. Catching up with friends and family over a glass of wine is a scenario familiar to many of us, yet alcohol consumption is often a divisive topic. It can be easy to get carried away and have one drink too many, which can sometimes have unwanted medical consequences. Recently, Medical News Today have reported on many studies concerned with the effects of alcohol consumption, with some questioning how much alcohol is safe to drink and others suggesting that a couple of glasses may even be beneficial. However, some people tend to engage in excessive drinking on a regular basis, and scientists are still struggling to understand the mechanism that leads to this excessive consumption. Now, researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, led by Dr. Dorit Ron, have used mouse models to study wh

Gay rights trailblazer Edith Windsor dies

Image
Gay rights activist Edith Windsor, whose same-sex marriage fight led to a landmark US ruling, has died aged 88. Her death was confirmed to the New York Times by her wife Judith Kasen-Windsor. Ms Windsor's Supreme Court case struck down the Defense of Marriage Act in 2013, granting same-sex married couples federal recognition for the first time. She had sued the US government after being ordered to pay $363,053 (£224,940) in federal estate tax after her previous wife died. The couple had been partners for 44 years and had married in Canada in 2007. Ms Windsor argued that the provision of the law which defined marriage as between a man and a woman prevented her from getting a tax deduction due to married couples - and was unconstitutional. In a landmark 2013 ruling the US Supreme agreed - and that decision became the basis for a wave of further court rulings increasing the rights of same-sex couples.  In 2015 another crucial Supreme Court ruling gave same

Europe steps up response to Irma

Image
European countries are boosting relief efforts in their Caribbean territories devastated by Hurricane Irma, amid criticism over the response. French President Emmanuel Macron, who is visiting French islands that took the full force of the storm, said a huge "airlift" was bringing more aid. UK Foreign Minister Boris Johnson is due in the region and the king of the Netherlands is touring Dutch islands. Irma killed at least 23 people in the three countries' overseas territories. The victims include 10 dead on the French island of St Barts and on the French part of St Martin - which is shared with the Netherlands. As he arrived in the region on Tuesday, President Macron said the government had responded with "one of the biggest airlifts since World War Two". Miss America runner-up wows with Bollywood number at 2018 beauty pageant

Image
Miss Missouri Jennifer Leigh Davis has been a strong advocate of multiculturalism, and an example of that was her choice to perform beautifully on a Bollywood song 'Naacho Re' from Jai Ho for the talent round of the Miss America 2018 beauty pageant.  There is no denying the mass appeal that Bollywood dances now have internationally. The peppy and rhythmic songs and foot-tapping beats have a huge fan base in the US as well, and an example of this came to the fore when Miss America 2018 beauty pageant runner-up Jennifer Leigh Davis danced to the tunes of Bollywood in the talent round, winning hearts everywhere. The 23-year-old apparently danced to the song ‘Naacho Re’ from the movie Jai Ho, and by the look of it, she pretty much nailed the moves. Though we haven’t been able to get our hands on the video of the performance yet, the contestant herself shared some gifs from the event, and seems like she really rocked the number. With clean cuts and agile motion

Sperm is Surprisingly Good for your Health!

Image
It’s no secret that sex can give you some serious health benefits, it can actually help you live longer, it can help you relax, and it burns some serious calories (bonus points), but one element of sex that hasn’t seen much research is sperm and it’s benefits. And believe us, it has a lot more than you might have ever thought! Semen is a Natural Anti-Depressant A study carried out at the State University of New York in Albany showed that being exposed to sperm lowered symptoms of depression. 293 women were surveyed and those who were not using condoms showed much fewer signs of depression than those who were using condoms. The vagina can absorb components of semen that are beneficial to their health and they are easily detected in the blood stream. Obviously this does not mean to have unprotected sex with anyone, you are still at risk of pregnancy and STIs but if you are in a trusting relationship and have another form of contraception going bare-back is definite
