Lib Dems Snatch Chesham And Amersham Seat Off Tories In Historical By-Election Victory

Lib Dems Snatch Chesham And Amersham Seat

The Liberal Democrats have snatched victory from the Tories in a shock end result at the Chesham and Amersham by-election.

Conservative Peter Fleet lost the seat to the Lib Dem candidate Sarah Green after the outcomes were declared shortly before 2am on Friday.

The Lib Dems recorded 21,517 votes in contrast to 13,489 for the Tories in a massive swing for the party.

In a speech on her win Sarah said: "I am humbled via the faith you have positioned in me.

"Together we have stated enough is enough, we will be heard and the government will listen."

The amazing victory saw Ms Green defeat Tory Peter Fleet by a majority of 8,028.

The Liberal Democrats said of the win: "Liberal Democrats WIN Chesham and Amersham! Huge congratulations to Sarah Green and the outstanding Lib Dem team on the ground.

Defeated Tory candidate Peter Fleet said: "It's clear that that on this occasion the constituents right here in Chesham and Amersham have chosen a one-of-a-kind candidate to represent them, to serve as their Member of Parliament.

"I look ahead to how we can begin to rebuild that trust and perception amongst all those people in Chesham and Amersham and as far as the Conservative Party is concerned that work virtually starts in the morning."

Before her shock win Sarah Green stated on Twitter: "I have cherished every minute of this campaign. From the doorstep conversations to the warm welcomes visiting nearby businesses and community groups.

The constituency in Buckinghamshire has been held via Boris Johnson's party since its advent in 1974.

The by-election race had been precipitated after Dame Cheryl Gillan, who had been the MP since 1992, died in April.

Ed Davey's Lib Dems had insisted the race was close and could “go down to the wire” and that the Tories "could be in for a shock" before polls opened.

Reacting to the information the party leader said: "Congratulations to Sarah Green who has just despatched a shockwave thru British politics.
