Secondary School Students In England Are Refusing To Wear Masks, Which Is Generating Concern.

As they return to school in England, some older students are refusing to take lateral flow examinations and wearing facial covers in classrooms, according to parents and other students.

Charities are concerned about the consequences of ignoring this guidance on disadvantaged kids.

Other parents, on the other hand, claim that masks have an impact on their children's learning.

Schools, according to the government, "may decide how best to encourage" students to take examinations and wear masks.

The Department for Education (DfE) stated that students should not be "denied education" because they wear a mask or not.

It has already stated that it is committed to keeping schools open despite the fact that more staff absences are likely.

'We don't need to wear masks,' says the group.

Pupils in England have been advised to do Covid tests in school before returning to class this week, as well as to wear face coverings in class.

These are, however, only suggestions and are not obligatory.

Molly, a Year 8 student in West Yorkshire whose entire identity and school are being withheld, told the BBC that several of her classmates refused to wear face coverings.

"Can you please put your masks on?" a teacher will ask. "And they'll simply respond, 'No, we don't need to wear masks, and we don't want to wear them,'" she explained.

"A couple folks said that the other day in the corridor when we passed them."

It helped the students feel "more," she claimed.

When Steve's 16-year-old daughter returned to school, she contacted him to tell that "quite a few" students were not wearing face coverings.

He stated she was "somewhat concerned" because he and his wife are essential employees and his father was hospitalized with Covid in 2020.

"I'm a little surprised they don't have the power to enforce the issue," he remarked.

Children at his son's school refusing to wear masks, according to another father who asked not to be identified, demonstrated a "lack of leadership" from head teachers.

Other parents, on the other hand, were concerned about the impact of masks in the classroom on learning.

Because of the large number of Covid cases, a mother in Kent said her son's school had been wearing them since September.

"He claims that wearing a mask for lengthy periods of time makes it difficult to concentrate," she explained.

She said she was glad they were introduced, but she wished youngsters were given more opportunities to be outside and breathe fresh air.

"This will have a long-term influence [on learning]," she said.
