Can an Awards Show Solve Fashion's Sustainability Challenge?

Image
MILAN, Italy — Second only to oil, fashion is one of the world’s most polluting industries. Practically every stage in the life cycle of clothing has negative implications for our planet. And if the world’s population rises to 8.5 billion people by 2030, as expected by the United Nations, overall apparel consumption will rise by 63 percent, from 62 million tonnes today to 102 million tonnes in 2030, significantly amplifying the scale of the problem, according to a recent report by the Boston Consulting Group and Global Fashion Agenda, a forum on fashion and sustainability. Now, Livia Firth ’s sustainability consultancy Eco-Age and the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana (CNMI) have teamed up to co-host the Green Carpet Fashion Awards, a glitzy event which will showcase the “Made in Italy” supply chain, celebrate the Italian producers that champion ethical practices, and spotlight sustainability success stories before a crowd of celebrities and industry insiders at

These New $100 Jeans Will Fit Better Than Your Favorite Vintage Pair

Image
As far as denim goes, there are pretty much two camps of thought. Either you constantly search the web for the most recent drop of your favorite brand's new pairs, or you're a die-hard vintage buyer who won't even look at a new pair. If you fall into the latter category, what we're about to say next will go against your entire outlook toward denim shopping, but we promise it's worth the disruption. Many have tried before to re-create the way vintage jeans fit, their thick material, and so many other seemingly impossible-to-capture details. What sets the brand B Sides apart from the rest is its relentless search for "stretch that doesn't look like stretch" which led them to a "family-owned mill in Georgia, founded in 1845, that carried a thick, slubby indigo twill with stretch—a decades-old material kept in production solely for manufacturers of farm gear."  Additionally, the brand is retailing its creations at affordable

Which Brand Won London Fashion Week?

Image
WHO won Instagram at London Fashion Week? According to the social media platform’s in-house data team, the answer is Topshop, which beat Christopher Bailey’s ode to Britain at Burberry and Tommy Hilfiger’s celebrity-packed extravaganza to become the most buzzed about show on Instagram, the company revealed exclusively to Vogue . Topshop amassed more tags, mentions, and comments than any other designer during London Fashion Week. So how did the home-grown, high-street mainstay best both a heritage icon and a spectacle that had not one, not two, but three Hadid siblings? Aside from the parade of top models, which included industry darlings Adwoa Aboah, Joan Smalls and Jourdan Dunn, Topshop’s presence is unrivalled on the social media platform.  The brand posted more videos and stories than any other designer during London Fashion Week - and twice as many stories over the last month than third-place Hilfiger. But with the longest runway and the largest in-person audience o

McCain sinks Obamacare repeal again

Image
Senator John McCain has said he cannot support his fellow Republicans' latest effort to repeal Obamacare, dealing it a potentially fatal blow. The Arizona senator, who is battling brain cancer, said he "cannot in good conscience" vote for the new plan, which President Donald Trump backs. Mr McCain said it was wrong to pass such far-reaching legislation without input from the Democrats. It is the second time he has thwarted his party leadership on the issue. Republicans need 50 votes in a 100-seat chamber they control 52-48 to succeed. With Democrats united in opposition, there is little margin for error. Mr McCain's objection could doom conservatives' seven-year campaign to erase Democratic former President Barack Obama's signature legislative achievement. In a statement on Friday, the Arizona senator said such a bill demands extensive hearings, debate and amendment. "That is the only way we might achieve bipartisan consensus on l

Raw milk may prevent allergy and asthma, but is it safe?

Image
Raw milk has been linked to lower rates of allergy and asthma. That being said, it can also harbor deadly bacteria. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warn against consuming raw milk because it can contain bacteria that have the potential to cause serious illness and death. Pasteurization, which is the process of heating milk to kill bacteria, is the only way to ensure that milk is safe to drink. Yet scientific studies link raw milk consumption - especially in early life - to lower levels of allergy and asthma. Is this evidence convincing enough to risk drinking potentially unsafe raw milk? Raw milk during childhood Georg Loss, from the University of Basel in Switzerland, and his colleagues from across Europe conducted a study in European children aged between 6 and 12. They showed that allergy and asthma rates are lower in those who drank only raw milk. Children who drank some raw and some regular milk had lower allergy rates, but only if they were

Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief said three were found dead at the nursing home in the city of Hollywood. Five others died in hospital. Ten million people are still without power in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas after Hurricane Irma. The storm - which has claimed more than two dozen lives in the US - struck southwestern Florida on Sunday morning as a category four hurricane before weakening to a tropical depression on Monday. Irma earlier left a trail of destruction in the Caribbean, where nearly 40 people were killed. Hollywood Police Chief Tomas Sanchez said the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills facility has been sealed off and police are conducting a criminal investigation. State investigators from the Florida Office of Attorney Gen

Model Teddy Quinlivan Makes a Powerful Statement About Trans Rights

Teddy Quinlivan has spent the last few days walking for labels like Coach, Oscar de la Renta, and Tory Burch, emerging as one of the season’s leading faces. But today, Quinlivan is making headlines for a very different reason: She revealed publicly for the first time that she is transgender in a special interview with CNN and released an accompanying video on her Instagram page, instantly stepping into the role of advocate.
