Obasanjo advises Buhari not to run for second term

Obasanjo said he worked against his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to help the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Buhari win the last presidential election. But, the situation that made Nigerians to vote massively for Buhari, he said, is playing itself out again. The former President, who recently bagged a doctorate degree in Christian Theology from the National Open University (NOUN), issued a “Special Press Statement”, titled:  The way out: A clarion call for Coalition for Nigeria Movement , which he gave the media in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. Obasanjo said: “The lice of poor performance in government – poverty, insecurity, poor economic management, nepotism, gross dereliction of duty, condoning of misdeed – If not outright encouragement of it; lack of progress and hope for the future, lack of national cohesion and poor management of internal political dynamics and widening inequality – are very much with us today.” “With such lice of

Stakeholders in the Liquefied Petroleum Gas sector (LPG) sector, under the aegis of the Nigerian Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association (NLPGA) have unveiled measures to end the incessant gas plant explosions in the country. This is coming as the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has commenced investigation into the recent fire incident in a gas plant in Magodo area of Lagos, which claimed two lives. Rising from its emergency meeting in Lagos, the Safety and Technical Committee of NLPGA has called for greater collaboration with agencies of government to eliminate incidents of gas plant explosions in the country. In a communiqué at the end of its recent meeting, the committee noted that the gas plant explosions recorded in 2018 have highlighted the need to address the three overarching industry objectives – safe handling and best practises in LPG; loss of containment (prevention of gas leaks); and successful disaster management. “As an association w

Us shutdown to end as congress strikes deal

Image
The US government partial shutdown is set to end after Senate Republicans and Democrats voted to approve a temporary funding bill. Senator Chuck Schumer said Democrats would support the bill if Republicans address a programme that shields young immigrants from deportation. Democrats refused to vote for the bill unless they secured protections for recipients of the Obama-era programme. Mr Schumer said the three-day shutdown was expected to end in a few hours. What's the political reaction? Mr Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader, lambasted President Donald Trump for failing to help reach a bipartisan deal, adding that he had not spoken with him since a meeting on Friday before the shutdown began. The New York senator said he was hopeful about talks on so-called Dreamers, more than 700,000 young immigrants brought to the US as children who were protected under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Daca) programme. Jamie Dornan Once Glued Wig Hair to His Penis to Impress Girls

Image
Mr. Grey went to great lengths to try and impress girls as a teen. His words. Jamie Dornan is the king of suave as he continuously seduces his onscreen lover  Dakota Johnson  in the hit  Fifty Shades   films but his adolescent sex life was as awkward as most people's. Possibly even more. The 35-year-old actor recently told an embarrassing story that brings to mind an R-rated teen comedy romp more than an erotic romance. Speaking on the  Graham Norton Show  on Friday, while sitting with fellow celebs  Helen Mirren and Liam Neeson , Dornan said that he was a "late developer" and that at age 15, he "looked about 7." He said that he was performing in an amateur production of  Anton Chekhov 's  The Cherry Orchard . He said he had no facial hair, so a "black, very acrylic, highly flammable wig" was cut and glued to his face to make him look older for his performance. He said he hoped to go a party after the play, so he decid

HIV could be treated with a once-a-week pill

Image
HIV therapy involves a combination of drugs that must be taken once or twice daily, making treatment adherence challenging for many people. But researchers may have found a solution to this problem, in the form of a pill that only needs to be taken once per week.   Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Brigham and Women's Hospital — both located in Boston, MA — have developed an ingestible capsule that can slowly release 1 week's worth of antiretroviral drugs. The team's novel creation has the potential to transform HIV therapy, as it means that people may only need to take a single pill once every week, rather than multiple medications every day. Co-lead study author Robert Langer, the David H. Koch Institute Professor at MIT, and his colleagues believe that their "pillbox in a capsule" could combat the current problem of adherence to antiretroviral therapy; research has indicated that up to 30 pe

Biafra: Court decides IPOB’s fate today

Image
The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja will today rule on the proscription of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB. The Acting Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Abdul Abdu-Kafarati, will deliver the judgment in the suit seeking to void the proscription and declaration of IPOB, as a terrorist organization. The Pro-Biafra group had through its lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, approached the court challenging the ruling it delivered on September 20, 2017, which outlawed it on the strength of an ex-parte motion the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, filed on behalf of the government. The court had declared as illegal, all activities of IPOB, particularly in the South-East and South-South regions of the country in the said ruling. The Acting Chief Justice, who gave the ruling in chambers, further restrained “any person or group of persons from participating in any of the group’s activities.” The judge further

After spending 11 months as a prostitute in London, Polly's ready to tell her horrifying story from the streets   Polly Trope* spent 11 months working as a prostitute, detouring into selling sex shortly after quitting her PhD at an Ivy League university in the US. "I had really bad mental health issues and although I wanted to finish my degree I knew I couldn't," she reveals. "So I decided to return to London, where I'd studied for my undergraduate degree. I reckoned it would be easier to find somewhere to stay and get a job there than it was in America."  But when she arrived in London, Polly didn't immediately get round to looking for work. "I drank a lot and took drugs and used up all my savings," she says. "One night I was thrown out of my lodgings because I hadn't paid my rent. So I just went into Soho, where I bumped into one of my dealers."
