'My son has an amazing mind' - mother explains incredible way she communicates with son born with cerebral palsy

Image
Chantal Bryan, 40, knew her son Jonathan, 12, couldn’t speak, but she had a gut instinct there was a way to communicate with him… My son Jonathan started secondary school last year, and like any parent, I was anxious. But I needn’t have worried – he’s already a bit famous there. He came home recently and told me about some boys being jealous of the attention he got from Year 8 girls! Jonathan is bright – cleverer than me – and his poetry is amazing. But he’s not a wise sage all the time, he’s a naughty 11-year-old underneath it all, who is fun to be with. Although it could’ve all been so different, he was silent for so long. In 2006, Jonathan was born with cerebral palsy and renal failure. We’d been driving to a country pub and another car smashed into us, and although I was fine, it caused a placental abruption and Jonathan was being deprived of oxygen. He had to be delivered by emergency caesarean and was born blue and lifeless. In the first few days he didn’

Nigeria: HURIWA cautions Buhari against dissolving governing board of PSC

Image
A PRO-DEMOCRACY and non-governmental organisation, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has cautioned President Muhammadu Buhari against dissolving the governing board of Police Service Commission (PSC). HURIWA’s warning came against the backdrop of a purported petition to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha by a Lagos based group – Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC) – asking that the chairman of the commission Mike Okiro, a retired Inspector General of Police be stopped from parading himself as head of the Commission. But HURIWA in a written presentation submitted to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation completely ruled out the legal validity of the so-called dissolution of the PSC’s board as insinuated by the Lagos non-governmental group, submitting that constitutionally the presidency has no power to dissolve a board recognized in the constitution and whose statutory tenure will run ti

Polish President signs controversial Holocaust bill into law

Polish President Andrzej Duda signed Poland's controversial new Holocaust bill late Tuesday ahead of it being assessed by the country's Constitutional Tribunal.   The law would make it illegal to accuse the nation of complicity in crimes committed by Nazi Germany, including the Holocaust.   It would also ban the use of terms such as "Polish death camps" in relation to Auschwitz and other such camps located in Nazi-occupied Poland.   Violations will be punished by a fine or a jail sentence of up to three years. Duda's spokesman, Krzysztof Lapinski, confirmed the bill had been signed. The President's office says the majority of the legislation will take effect 14 days after it appears at the country's Journal of Laws -- which could happen as early as Wednesday. The rest of the legislation will come into force within three months. The bill will also be reviewed by the country's Constitutional Tribunal to ensure it doesn'

North Korea to hold military parade ahead of Winter Olympics

Image
North Korea is set to hold its 70th anniversary military parade, a day ahead of the start of the Winter Olympics in South Korea.  Pyongyang's annual parade, marking the founding of its armed forces, has been held in April for 40 years. However, the country's state media announced earlier this year that the date had been changed to 8 February. North Korea has dismissed criticism of its plans, saying no-one had the right to take issue. "It is a custom and very basic common sense that any country in the world takes the founding of its military very seriously and celebrates it with extravagant events," said the ruling Workers' Party newspaper, the Rodong Sinmun. The US has said it would rather the parade not take place as the focus should be on the Games. On Thursday, North Korea said it has no intention of meeting US officials during the Games, according to the North's official KCNA news agency. South Korean government officials had said l

Ben Affleck's Father Says Hollywood Has Been ''Major Factor'' in Son's Drinking

Image
Timothy Affleck , the father of Ben Affleck and Casey Affleck , is sounding off in a rare interview, revealing that he believes that fame has taken a major "toll" on both of his famous sons. In new interview with Grazia , Timothy, who revealed that he's had his own battle against the bottle, said that he attributes many of his sons' issues, specifically Ben's well-documented issues with alcohol, to the gilded facade of Tinsel Town. Not mincing words, Timothy explained to the magazine, "Hollywood is a disgusting place. I think that's been a major factor in Ben's drinking. You're kind of forced to develop a persona that is hard to shed and go home to your family. It affects your whole life. I think that's one of the dangers of the film industry." In the interview, Timothy also attributed his own alcoholism to his son's problem with drinking. "I was a chronic, severe alcoholic for several years. I had to recover a
