Paris Jackson Lights Up Her First Film Premiere in Valentino

Image
Paris Jackson’s star is rising. She appears in her first movie, Gringo , alongside heavyweights like Charlize Theron and Amanda Seyfried, and for last night's premiere in L.A., Jackson chose a look that reflected her new status. Her black gown from Valentino with a snake curving up its necklines projected the elegance of old Hollywood. She kept things simple elsewhere with her slicked-back, oversized hoop earrings, and a plum-stained pout, offering a departure from the bombshell vibe of her Oscar-night Versace dress and the hippie chic of her off-duty wardrobe.Of course, Jackson’s foray into classic fashion doesn’t mean she’s lost her inner rock chick.  She let her personality show beneath the layers of tulle and embroidery, from her visible tattoos to her now-signature beaded bracelets. Enjoying the night out with her co-stars and her big brother Prince, she marked the next chapter of her career in style.

US moots exemptions to metal tariffs

Image
Canada and Mexico may be exempt from US plans to impose tariffs on metal imports, the White House says. Other countries may also see "carve-outs" on national security grounds, press secretary Sarah Sanders said. US President Donald Trump has said steel products will face a 25% tariff, with 10% on aluminum goods. But there are fears the plans could spark a trade war, and it reportedly helped lead to the resignation of White House economic adviser Gary Cohn. The EU has proposed retaliatory measures against a number of US goods including bourbon and peanut butter. Despite opposition at home and abroad, Ms Sanders said the US president would sign the measures in by the end of the week. But she added: "There are potential carve-outs for Mexico and Canada based on national security, and possibly other countries as well based on that process. That would be [on] a case-by-case and country by country basis." Mr Trump has railed against the US trade

Black Panther — Good film with many lessons for Nigeria

Image
Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria, has disclosed the lessons he has learnt from the new movie ‘Black Panther’. Atiku Abubakar writes: Over the weekend, I joined my children to watch the much talked about ‘Black Panther’. It was a good film, and I was happy they took me to see it. However, I came out of the movie theater a little upset. When the first scenes came up, and I saw “Sambisa Forest” I was unhappy that the only reference the filmmakers could have for Nigeria was a negative one, but I was later encouraged by the thought of Africans solving African problems. That is a good thing, the kinds of things we used to do. For young people who may not remember, Nigerian civil servants and indeed most able citizens used to contribute money every month to support the struggle against Apartheid in South Africa. Nigeria was the single stabilizing force across West Africa. Helping to restore peace in Liberia and Sierra Leone are examples of the gigantic st

France to fix legal age of sexual consent as 15

Image
France plans to fix the legal age of sexual consent as 15, so that an adult who has sex with someone younger than that will be charged with rape. Equality Minister Marlène Schiappa welcomed the move, which follows advice from doctors and legal experts. Currently, prosecutors must prove sex with someone under-15 was forced in order to bring rape charges. The change comes amid uproar over two recent cases of men accused of having sex with 11-year-old girls. Under the existing legislation, if there is no violence or coercion proved, offenders may only be charged with sexual abuse of a minor and not rape . This has a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of €75,000 (£66,000; $87,000). Sentences are the same for sexual assaults of minors and non-minors , but rape convictions carry much harsher punishments. The government is to approve the new age limit as part of a package of other laws against sexual violence and harassment in the coming weeks. It had been di

Why Didn't He Hate Me?

I'd killed his wife in a car accident, and now he wanted to talk to me. M y junior year of high school was off to a great start. By the third day, I'd finally memorized my class schedule, my locker combination and most of my pep-squad routines. That morning I slipped on my new jeans and sandals, grabbed my books and pompoms, and kissed my mom goodbye. It was a 10-mile drive to school from our house in the country. As I got into my little brown car, I grabbed my seat belt, thinking, I never remember to wear this thing, but I may as well put it on now that I'm thinking about it. As I came over a hill, I remembered I still needed to put lipstick on. I adjusted my rear-view mirror for a quick application. As my eyes returned to the road, I caught a glimpse of something moving, then felt my car suddenly jolt. I had hit something. My initial thought was perhaps it was a farm animal. But I had a sinking feeling it was something much worse. As I stopped the

Nigeria: Serap Backs Saraki On Single Pay for Ex-Governors

Image
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has backed the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki on his call that all ex-governors still serving in government should not receive pensions from their states. Saraki on Wednesday had commended the Kwara State House of Assembly for heeding his call and passing a bill to stop pensions of ex-governors still holding elective or appointive positions. Saraki had then called on other states and their assemblies to emulate Kwara state by passing a similar bill to abolish double pay. In backing the stance of Saraki, SERAP challenged the chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum, Governor Abdulaziz Yari and his colleagues to show commitment and end double pay for ex-governors and their deputies. The NGO had on Tuesday requested the President of the Senate to "use his leadership position to sponsor a resolution in the Senate that would call on other states to abolish payment of double
