This New Year, The UK ls lncomparably Better Positioned - Boris Johnson
The UK is in a "incomparably better" condition than it was at this time last year, but Prime Minister David Cameron has warned that New Year's Eve revelers should be cautious.
Boris Johnson praised the "heroic" vaccination campaign in a year-end letter, noting that all people in England had now been provided a booster shot.
However, he cautioned of Omicron's "challenges" and increased hospital admissions.
People who plan to go out later should do a Covid test first and "remember the need of ventilation," according to the PM.
In many parts of the country, New Year's Eve celebrations will be reduced.
In the run-up to Christmas, Mr Johnson resisted calls to impose new limits in England in response to the highly contagious Omicron type. However, a number of activities, including the usual Trafalgar Square party and fireworks in London, have been canceled.
Meanwhile, in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, pubs, taverns, and restaurants are subject to stricter regulations, and the number of individuals who can congregate is limited.
The Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh have been canceled, while Wales' First Minister Mark Drakeford has urged visitors to England to "think consciously and carefully" about their plans for the new year.
The new reduced self-isolation restrictions in Northern Ireland have taken effect, allowing patients with Covid to be freed after seven days if they test negative twice on days six and seven.
Mr Johnson said "amazing" numbers of people have reacted to the invitation to get vaccinated in a message that will be posted on social media later.
He continued, " "It is only because of that massive national effort that we have anything to celebrate tonight. I must, however, urge everyone to exercise caution and, if going out, to take a test, as well as to remember the need of ventilation. If you're in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland, follow the guidelines."
