Nusrat Ghani: The Prime Minister has directed the Cabinet Office to look into the claim of 'Muslimness.'

Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister, has ordered a Cabinet Office investigation into claims made by a Muslim MP who alleges her faith was used as a justification for her dismissal as a minister in 2020.

"Muslimness was presented as an issue," Nusrat Ghani said she was told by a government whip.

The Conservative MP expressed her enthusiasm for the investigation, adding that all she wanted was for the problem to be handled seriously.

Mark Spencer, the Conservative Chief Whip, said the charges were absolutely incorrect.

The fresh Cabinet Office investigation comes at the start of what could be a challenging week for the prime minister, as a report into gatherings on government property that occurred while coronavirus restrictions were in place is due to be completed this week.

Sue Gray, a senior civil servant, has been tasked with investigating the nature and purpose of the events, as well as who attended them, "in light of the advice in place at the time."

Some of Mr Johnson's MPs have called for him to quit over the issue, while others say they would wait until Ms Gray's report is released before passing judgment.

Nus Ghani's accusations come at a time when a lot of different fuses have been lighted.
