David Bowie and Lady Gaga were among the celebrities that wore Mugler's creations. He designed Kim Kardashian's legendary "wet dress" for the Met Gala in 2019 after designing many stage costumes for Beyoncé.
His perfumes, such as Angel and Alien, were popular in later years.
"We are devastated to inform Mr Manfred Thierry Mugler's passing on Sunday January 23rd 2022," Mugler's official Facebook page said.
Mugler was hailed as a "visionary whose imagination... pushed people around the world to be bolder and dream greater every day" in a tribute posted on his Instagram profile.
He died of natural causes, according to his agent, according to the AFP news agency.
He was born Manfred Thierry Mugler in Strasbourg, France, in 1948, and was a gifted performer by the age of 14. He was a dancer with the Ballet du Rhin by the age of 14. He was also a fashion model and an acrobat.
Mugler founded his first boutique in Paris in the 1970s, inspired by his early passion in designing his own garments.
"I wasn't sure what I wanted to pursue," he recently said, "but fashion took off for me very rapidly in Paris once I displayed my sketches."
