Gavin Williamson, The Former Secretary Of State For Education, Will Be Knighted

Gavin Williamson, the former defence secretary and education secretary, will be knighted.

In September's reshuffle, the Conservative MP for South Staffordshire was fired from the cabinet.

Mr Williamson received calls to resign from the opposition over his management of the pandemic's disruption to England's schools and tests.

The 45-year-old, who worked in manufacturing before joining politics, formerly served as the government's main whip.

He was awarded a CBE in 2016 for his political and public service, and his knighthood is believed to be for the same reasons.

Mr Williamson was initially elected to Parliament in 2010, and under Prime Minister Theresa May, he became chief whip, in charge of Conservative Party discipline, in 2016.

He famously maintained a pet tarantula named Cronus on his desk while in that position.

Mrs May appointed Mr Williamson as defence secretary in 2017, a position he held until 2019, when she fired him, claiming she had "lost faith in his ability to serve."

This came after an investigation into a leak from a National Security Council meeting over whether Huawei, a Chinese company, should be engaged in the UK's 5G network. Mrs May claimed to have "convincing proof" that Mr Williamson was behind the leak, but he denied it.

After Boris Johnson became Prime Minister, he returned to the cabinet as Education Secretary in the summer of 2019.

During the Covid epidemic, however, he faced harsh criticism from opposition parties for his management of school closures, free school meals, and GCSE and A-level exams.

In last autumn's reshuffle, Mr Williamson was replaced as education secretary by Nadhim Zahawi.

Bridget Phillipson, Labour's shadow education secretary, reacted to the news of his knighthood by saying: "Gavin Williamson allowed children to go hungry, wreaked havoc on the exam system for two years, and neglected to provide computers to students who were unable to learn during lockdowns. His track record is both incredible and disgusting."
