The US Accuses Russia Of War Crimes In Ukraine In An Official Statement

The US has officially charged Russian forces of war crimes in Ukraine, pledging to pursue justice "with every instrument at our disposal."

Joe Biden made the announcement as he was leaving for a trip to Europe to reinforce Western unity in the face of a growing invasion. Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, stated that the US reached its decision based on both public and intelligence sources.

"Today, I can say that the US administration believes that members of Russia's military have committed war crimes in Ukraine, based on information now available," Blinken stated.

"A court of law with jurisdiction over the crime is ultimately responsible for assessing criminal guilt in specific situations," he stated, adding that the US will continue to gather information and share it with international organizations.

Blinken stated, "We are dedicated to pursuing responsibility using every instrument available, including criminal proceedings."

The news comes a week after Joe Biden made an off-the-cuff statement about Vladimir Putin being a war criminal, prompting an official protest from the Kremlin, which warned that the remark could lead to a rift in bilateral relations.

When asked if the state department's designation applied to Putin explicitly, Beth Van Schaack, the newly confirmed ambassador at large for global criminal justice, said the courts would have to determine. "There are principles in international and local law that can stretch all the way up the chain of command," she noted.

The State Department did not provide specifics on which attacks and occurrences it deemed to be war crimes. "We've seen multiple reliable accounts of indiscriminate attacks and attacks specifically targeting people, as well as other atrocities," Blinken said in his statement. Thousands of innocent civilians have been killed or injured as a result of Russia's forces destroying apartment buildings, schools, hospitals, essential infrastructure, civilian vehicles, shopping centers, and ambulances.
