In Shanghai, A Covid Employee Beat A Dog To Death After Its Owner Tested Positive For Rabies

A beloved dog was beaten to death by a health worker in Shanghai, sparking outrage online and revealing the mounting grievances of residents trapped in China's Covid-19 hotspot.

After becoming popular on Chinese social media on Wednesday, a video of the beating at a residential compound in the city's Pudong sector was met with outrage.

A Covid prevention worker, covered head to toe in protective gear, chases the corgi down a street and hits it three times with a shovel, according to the video, which appears to have been shot by a resident of a nearby building. The dog is then shown lying lifeless.

The corgi is seen racing after a bus that is reported to be transporting its owner to an isolation unit in two photographs shared online. Another snap shows its body being placed in a garbage bag and transported away.

Multiple users have shared and deleted the video and photographs.

According to state-run magazine China News Weekly, the corgi's owner was in quarantine at the time of the incident and had released the dog onto the streets after being unable to find someone to care for it while he was away.
