Nigeria: Federal government can't fund road projects

The chairman, House committee on Works, Hon. Toby Okechukwu has revealed that the Federal  Government is currently is currently indebted to road contractors to the tune of N3 trillion with outstanding liability of N300 billion in the ministry of works. Hon. Okechukwu disclosed this in Abuja while speaking at the just concluded 2017 National Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Nigerian Institution of High way and Transportation Engineers (NIHTE) with the theme: " Transportation Sector Reform Bills: Tools for the Diversification of Nigerian Economy." With the high debt status, Okechukwu said it would be impossible for government alone to fund the construction of roads as it has a commitment to contractors to the tune of over N3 trillion with only an annual appropriation of only N240 billion. “We are not able to fund the road projects, that is the plain truth. We have an outstanding liability in the Ministry of Work of about N300 billion

South Africa's governing African National Congress (ANC) is preparing to choose a new party leader to succeed President Jacob Zuma. The main candidates are the current deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa, and former cabinet minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, President Zuma's ex-wife. The tense leadership battle has raised fears that the ANC could split before national elections in 2019. President Zuma can remain head of state until those elections. Whoever becomes the new ANC leader is likely to succeed him as president of the country. As delegates gathered for the four-day conference in Johannesburg, Mr Zuma, who faces multiple corruption allegations, has urged the party to unite behind the eventual winner. Austria's conservative People's Party has agreed a coalition with the far-right Freedom Party. The deal comes two months after a parliamentary election which the People's Party won but without an overall majority. At just 31, the People's Party's Sebastian Kurz is set to become the world's youngest head of government. If the coalition is ratified, Austria would become the only western European state with a governing far-right party. The parties previously governed the country together between 2000 and 2005. The two leaders gave no details about the government's programme. They said they would first inform Austria's President Alexander Van der Bellen and their respective parties on Saturday. Paul Okoye of the defunct P’Square group, has finally opened up on why himself and his brother, Jude Okoye, put up their Squareville mansion located in Omole Estate for sale. Back in September, the brothers had put the mansion up for sale and the agent is aiming to sell the building which has a swimming pool, basement and other exotic features for 320 Million Naira.
