Drinking alcohol can clear brain waste, study finds

Image
If you're partial to a drink or two, you will love the results of a recent study; researchers have found that a "low" intake of alcohol may help to cleanse the brain. In a mouse study, scientists from the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) in New York found that drinking the equivalent to around 2.5 alcoholic drinks per day could reduce brain inflammation. It was also found to increase the function of the glymphatic system, which is responsible for removing waste products from the brain. High alcohol exposure, however, was found to impair glymphatic function and increase brain inflammation. Lead study author Dr. Maiken Nedergaard, of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine at URMC, and colleagues recently reported their findings in the journal Scientific Reports . It should come as no surprise that excess alcohol intake can harm health. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) report that alcohol is a contributor to "more than 2

Ways to attract the right partner

Image
How amazing would it be to find the perfect partner to spend your life with (or at least a long while), in absolute bliss? It’s not going to happen by some movie-moment magical events, so let me show you how you can take your love life into your own hands. A well-matched partner won't meet all of your needs. As there's no such thing as a perfect partner, you're shooting for about 85%.  This means that you may meet someone who ticks all the boxes except physically he's not quite what you imagined.  That's OK. As a product of this culture, you probably have a warped definition of attraction that could use some redefining anyway. Likewise, she may not be as socially adapt as you had imagined.  My point is that these aren't deal breakers, so while you're creating your vision list, it's absolutely essential to know that your future partner won't meet all of your desires and that you'll have to sacrifice somewhere.

Air strike cripples Syria cave hospital

Image
A hospital built under 20m (60 feet) of rock in a rebel-held part of central Syria has been wrecked by a powerful air strike, medical sources say. They say the hospital in Hama province - regarded as one of the best protected in the country - was put out of service by Thursday's strike. No casualties are reported but aid workers say it is the worst in a wave of attacks against hospitals in Syria. Meanwhile the UN says aid is no longer getting through to besieged areas. The Al Maghara cave hospital in the town of Kafr Zita was hit by five missiles in Thursday's strike, says the Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations (UOSSM), an international coalition of medical charities. "It's widely believed to be the most secure hospital in Syria," UOSSM spokesman Avi D'Souza said. Mr D'Souza said the reason there were no deaths seemed to be that staff and patients left when they heard incoming jets. The group says the facility - which serve

My Boyfriend Raped Me

Image
Jack seemed like a great guy at first. He'd send me flowers and shower me with affection. But then he began to change. I first met Jack * at a BBQ dinner during my college's Freshman Orientation. He was cracking jokes and making everyone laugh. He seemed like such a fun guy. He was also a Christian—the perfect package. Within a month we were dating. I was flattered that Jack wanted to pursue me and excited about the way he showered me with affection. He would send me flowers. He'd also buy me cards and write Scripture mixed with professions of his love for me. I wanted to believe he was really sincere. So I blinded myself to how he was slowly changing. When we first started dating he loved everything about me—the way I dressed, my laugh, my relationship with God, the way I interacted with my girlfriends. But it wasn't long before he started to pick on small things. One day he decided he didn't like my roommate. So I distanced myself f

Helen Mirren stars as the tragic widow who never stopped building in case she died in in new film Winchester. Sarah Winchester had good reason to believe she had been singled out by dark forces. At just 26, she lost her infant daughter Annie. Fifteen years later her beloved husband William died of tuberculosis. The couple had had no more children and Sarah was understandably heartbroken. Stricken by inconsolable grief, she turned to a famous psychic in Boston called Adam Coons in the hope he could provide some guidance. The answer he came up with was extreme, the solution bizarre and the strange tale has been turned into a film starring Helen Mirren as the unfortunate Sarah. THE CURSED FORTUNE By any estimate Sarah Winchester was a wealthy woman. Her husband's father Oliver Winchester founded the firearms company which invented the revolutionary repeating weapon called the Henry rifle. Later it produced En fields and Browning automatics for the Bri
