David Venables has been charged with murder

An 88-year-old farmer has been charged with murdering his spouse whose remains were discovered in a septic tank 37 years after she went missing in 1982.


The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) stated David Venables is accused of killing Brenda Venables, 48, who was reported missing from the couple's then home at Bestmans Lane in Kempsey.


West Mercia Police launched a homicide investigation after the grim discover at the address in the Worcestershire village on July 12, 2019.


Mark Paul, head of the CPS' complicated casework unit, said: 'The choice to authorise the charge in opposition to the defendant was made after cautious consideration of all the handy proof of this complicated case and identifying that a prosecution is required in the public interest.

'The alleged offences took place between May 2 1982 and May 5 1982.


'The feature of the CPS is not to figure out whether an individual is responsible of a crook offence, however to make fair, unbiased and objective assessments about whether crook charges are appropriate.


'Criminal lawsuits are now active, and there must be no reporting, commentary or sharing of records on-line which could prejudice these proceedings.'


In July 2019, officers from West Mercia Police carried out searches at a bungalow in a quiet cul-de-sac in Kempsey, following the discovery of the remains earlier that month.
