Premier League Teams Spent £295 Million In January 2022, The Busiest Month Of The Year.
Tottenham made the largest signings on deadline day, completing the second-highest spending January in Premier League history with a total of £295 million spent.
As clubs appear to have recovered from the financial effects of Covid, a total of 12 Premier League transfers on deadline day brought expenditure to the highest level since £430 million in 2018.
In January 2021, Premier League clubs spent only £70 million, with less than £10 million spent on deadline day.
Spurs signed two Juventus players for at least £24 million, sold England midfielder Dele Alli to Frank Lampard's Everton for up to £40 million, and loaned England defender Dele Alli to Everton.
Newcastle signed two Premier League defenders, while Manchester City and Burnley spent over £10 million on forwards.
Arsenal signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on a free transfer to Barcelona, while Juventus leased Aaron Ramsey to Scottish champions Rangers.
Everton, Norwich, Newcastle, Watford, and Burnley accounted for more than half of the money spent by Premier League clubs (£150 million). The poorest five spent a total of £5 million last year.
"This transfer window indicates that the financial pressures of Covid on Premier League clubs are easing," said Dan Jones, partner and head of Deloitte's Sports Business Group. "Spending is firmly back to pre-pandemic levels, and remarkably among the highest we've ever seen in January."
"The Premier League continues to set the standard across the world, keeping its position as the world's richest domestic football league in terms of revenue, thanks to full stadia and strong overseas television deals."
Only £2 million more than the Premier League and EFL combined, Europe's other top four leagues spent 380 million euros (£317 million).
The £180 million in net expenditure by Premier League teams (cost of purchases minus sells) is the biggest since the January transfer window was inaugurated in 2003.
