Boris Johnson Travels To Saudi Arabia In An Attempt To Wean The Country Off Russian Oil

Boris Johnson arrives in the United Arab Emirates ahead of negotiations on energy supplies.

Boris Johnson will meet with Saudi Arabian leaders later this week in an attempt to form a "international coalition" against Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The Prime Minister will speak about securing energy supplies from the region, stating that the world must "wean itself off" Russian oil and gas.

However, because of the Saudi government's human rights record, Mr Johnson was chastised for travelling on the trip.

They carried out a one-day mass execution of 81 men on Saturday.

A number of MPs have asked the Prime Minister to postpone his visit.

Mr Johnson, on the other hand, argued that if the West wanted to "avoid being blackmailed" by Russian President Vladimir Putin, it needed to shift away from Russia's hydrocarbons and investigate alternative options.

Ed Miliband, the shadow climate and net zero secretary, said the PM's "thought it necessary to go to Saudi Arabia" despite human rights concerns was "a symptom of our vulnerability and energy insecurity as a society."

"Once again, it underlines that the only solution to the energy issue we confront is a green energy sprint at home, so we can eliminate our reliance on fossil fuels once and for all," he added.

On Wednesday morning, Mr. Johnson arrived in the United Arab Emirates.

Mr Johnson arrived in the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday morning. Saudi Arabia executed 81 men in one day.

At Abu Dhabi airport, he was greeted by British Ambassador to the UAE Patrick Moody and led past a guard of honour.

His first meeting will be with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed of the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi, before traveling to Riyadh to see Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia.

After arriving at Abu Dhabi airport, the prime minister reviewed a guard of honour.

The focus of the talks, according to No 10, will be on "efforts to strengthen energy security and minimize volatility in energy and food prices," including the possibility of increasing oil supply from the country to the UK.

The Prime Minister warned ahead of the visit: "President Putin's ruthless and unprovoked assault on Ukraine will have far-reaching ramifications for the world, far beyond Europe's borders.

"The United Kingdom is forming an international coalition to deal with the new reality we are confronted with. The world must wean itself from Russian hydrocarbons and put an end to Putin's oil and gas addiction.

"Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are two of the most important international allies in this endeavor. We will collaborate with them to maintain regional stability, aid humanitarian relief efforts, and stabilize global energy markets in the long run."
