Things to know before you say i do

  1. Redefine marriage:    Begin to see marriage as an act: “Mar ‘D’ Rage”. . Consider that the word “mar” means to spoil or render less useful.Anger is a weapon that can either be channeled negatively or positively. However, when it comes to a serious or marriage relationship you must consciously bring your anger under control or better still, destroy your anger, otherwise it will destroy your marriage. Surrender your rage because no one benefits from the effects of anger. Your spouse will get on your nerves many times, learn to “Mar the Rage” before the rage renders your marriage useless. 2. Establish a true acceptance of our parents and of their relationships.   Some of us were blessed enough to have parents with a very strong and loving relationship. Others were not so lucky. Before getting married, leaving behind any resentment and negativity you feel about your parents’ marriage is really important. Your marriage never has to be your parent’s marriage, a

How to avoid relationship killers

Image
People, even though they are in a relationship, are different from each other whether we care to admit or not. Ironically, this becomes apparent as soon as they fall for each other. If you ask the average person what breaks relationships apart, he or she might say money, lying or cheating. And that is true. But like death by a thousand paper cuts, there are even more insidious everyday habits that kill relationships too. To create a truly happy, healthy relationship, every couple, of every stripe, should take the most overlooked and under-discussed relationship killers to heart. HERE ARE SOME RELATIONSHIP KILLERS YOU SHOULD AVOID   Communication The life blood of every relationship is communication. What is communication? It is a process of sharing yourself verbally and non-verbally with another person in such a way that both of you understand and accept what you said. Liberian church massacre survivors seek US justice

Image
The Monrovia Church massacre in 1990 was the worst single atrocity of the Liberian civil war. About 600 civilians, including many children, were killed while taking refuge in a church. Now, four survivors are bringing a claim for damages against one of the men they believe was responsible, reports Elizabeth Blunt who was a BBC correspondent in Liberia at the time. It was July 1990, and rebel fighters were advancing on the capital, Monrovia. President Samuel Doe was holed up in his vast, gloomy Executive Mansion. After dark bands of soldiers roamed the streets, looting shops and warehouses and seeking out people from Nimba County, the area where the rebellion had started. They dragged the men from their homes, beating and often killing them. Hundreds of terrified families, looking for a safer place to sleep, took refuge in St Peter's Lutheran Church - a spacious building in a walled compound. Huge Red Cross flags flew at every corner. But on the night o

South Africa: ANC deciding president Zuma's fate

Image
Leaders of South Africa's ruling ANC party are meeting to decide the future of President Jacob Zuma, who is under intense pressure to quit. Reports quoting party insiders say the National Executive Committee (NEC) has given him two days to step down. ANC leader Cyril Ramaphosa was seen leaving the Pretoria talks, reportedly for Mr Zuma's nearby residence, before returning to the venue late on Monday. Mr Zuma, 75, has been battling corruption allegations. He has resisted increasing pressure to quit since December, when Mr Ramaphosa replaced him as leader of the ANC. Speaking to supporters in Cape Town on Sunday, Mr Ramaphosa said: "We know you want closure. Our people want this matter to be finalized." He acknowledged the ANC was going through "a period of difficulty, disunity and discord", and said he was seeking "a new beginning". He pledged to tackle the corruption that has marred Mr Zuma's nine years in office. Mr R

Image
Chantal Bryan, 40, knew her son Jonathan, 12, couldn’t speak, but she had a gut instinct there was a way to communicate with him… My son Jonathan started secondary school last year, and like any parent, I was anxious. But I needn’t have worried – he’s already a bit famous there. He came home recently and told me about some boys being jealous of the attention he got from Year 8 girls! Jonathan is bright – cleverer than me – and his poetry is amazing. But he’s not a wise sage all the time, he’s a naughty 11-year-old underneath it all, who is fun to be with. Although it could’ve all been so different, he was silent for so long. In 2006, Jonathan was born with cerebral palsy and renal failure. We’d been driving to a country pub and another car smashed into us, and although I was fine, it caused a placental abruption and Jonathan was being deprived of oxygen. He had to be delivered by emergency caesarean and was born blue and lifeless. In the first few days he didn’

Nigeria: HURIWA cautions Buhari against dissolving governing board of PSC

Image
A PRO-DEMOCRACY and non-governmental organisation, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has cautioned President Muhammadu Buhari against dissolving the governing board of Police Service Commission (PSC). HURIWA’s warning came against the backdrop of a purported petition to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha by a Lagos based group – Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC) – asking that the chairman of the commission Mike Okiro, a retired Inspector General of Police be stopped from parading himself as head of the Commission.
