States Are Abandoning Covid Restrictions, Leaving The White House In The Dust.

As pandemic restrictions are loosened in a number of US jurisdictions, the White House is under pressure to change its position on mask use.

Governors of New York, Illinois, and Massachusetts have announced that some mask mandates in their states will be repealed.

New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, and Oregon announced proposals to relax mask regulations earlier this week.

Governors have been pleading with the White House to issue advice on removing face coverings.

On Wednesday, however, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasized that it was not yet time to abolish US mask regulations.

Jen Psaki, a press secretary for the White House, said that Americans should follow the CDC guidelines rather than less stringent state or municipal regulations.

Democratic governors are putting on on President Joe Biden to change the mask rules.

Governors, on the other hand, are not waiting for approval from medical experts in Washington.

With the exception of Massachusetts, all of the governors who have eased restrictions this week are Democrats, including US Vice President. In most Republican-led states, mask rules have previously been relaxed or never implemented.

The governors of New York and Illinois said on Wednesday that their Covid-19 rules requiring face coverings in most indoor public venues would be repealed, but that the requirement would remain in place for schools.

From Thursday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said that people visiting most indoor public venues will no longer be required to wear a mask or provide proof of having taken the Covid-19 vaccine.

However, the office of Democratic Mayor Eric Adams in New York City stated that proof of vaccination would still be required to enter indoor public spaces.

After February 28, kids and instructors in Massachusetts will no longer be forced to wear masks in school, according to Republican Governor Charlie Baker of the liberal state.
