In East London, A Teen Girl Riding An E-Scooter Dies In A Collision With A Van

Following a collision with a van in east London, a teenage girl riding an e-scooter died.

On Green Street in Upton Park, the cyclist, who police say was 14 years old, collided with the vehicle. Paramedics treated her, however she died at the scene about 13:30 GMT.

The van's driver was with police, according to detectives, but he had not been detained.

The girl's family has been notified, according to the Met.

Following the incident, police have sealed off a half-mile stretch of the B167 in Newham.

Traffic is being diverted at both ends of the cordon, which runs from Selsdon Road to Barking Road.

Privately owned e-scooters are prohibited on public roads in the United Kingdom, while a rental scheme was launched in some sections of London in June 2021 as part of government-backed trials across the country.

More than half of the 931 e-scooter crashes in the UK last year occurred in London, according to official data from January to June 2021.

During the year 2021, the Met Police seized over 3,600 privately owned e-scooters.
