The Queen Will Not Attend The Maundy Thursday Service
Her Majesty the Queen The Queen will not attend the Royal Maundy Service at Windsor Castle's St George's Chapel. Her Majesty will be represented by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.
The service will take place on Thursday, April 14th. The Washing of the Feet and the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his Apostles are commemorated on Maundy Thursday, or Holy Thursday, during Holy Week. The Prince will follow the old tradition of awarding Maundy money to community stalwarts at the yearly celebration, which is a significant occasion on the royal calendar.
The monarch, who turns 96 on April 21, is unable to commit to attending, according to a royal source, because she does not want her absence to overshadow the event. As a result, a note is made in advance that she will not be present. Since being hospitalized for a night in October for an undisclosed ailment, the monarch has reduced her physical commitments. Doctors had urged her to relax despite the fact that it was not the coronavirus at the time. She did catch the virus earlier this year, but just had "cold-like symptoms," according to reports.
The Dean of Windsor, The Right Reverend David Conner KCVO, and the Lord High Almoner, The Right Reverend Dr John Ingge, will greet the Prince and Duchess.
Following the service, the Prince and Duchess will take an official portrait with the Royal Maundy Party on the West Steps.
Her Majesty made her first public appearance in months last month at Westminster Abbey, where she attended a Service of Thanksgiving for her late husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who died on April 9, 2021.
